Sometimes it can be quite overwhelming when your pet is diagnosed with a serious condition that will require lifelong medication, it is hard to take in the information your vet gives you at that time of diagnosis.

Our vets have summarised here some of the medications and what they are used for.

Active Advance

Active Advance chews are a highly palatable treat for dogs to help maintain mobility. They contain a combination of ingredients including the following important ingredients to support joint function in either growing, active or ageing dogs; Green lipped mussel which have high levels of Omega 3 for joint health and Glucosamine & Chondroitin both recognised supplements to maintain mobility. Active Advance can be given to all dogs that require joint support, though it is particularly useful for older pets, growing puppies (especially medium and large breeds), more active pets and those affected by or at risk of osteoarthritis.

Adaptil

Adaptil is a pheromone product which helps to reduce stress in dogs and is available in home diffuser, collars, spray and also chews format. The main Adaptil range contains the ‘dog appeasing pheromone’, a synthetic copy of the one a mother naturally releases to her puppies to provide them with confidence and reassurance. The Adaptil range helps dogs to tackle any time of stress and anxiety they come up against such as travelling, home alone issues, loud noise fears, generally anxious, visitors, walking etc.

Benazapet

Benazapet is used to help treat congestive heart failure in dogs and chronic kidney disease in cats. Benazapet contains Benazepril hydrochloride, which is an ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor drug. In dogs, Benazapet works by reducing the blood pressure and blood volume load on the heart. It is often used as part of a combination of drugs to manage cases of congestive heart failure. In cats with chronic renal insufficiency, Benazapet works by lowering the blood pressure in the filter of the kidneys and by reducing the amount of protein in the urine.

Caninsulin

Caninsulin contains Insulin (40 IU per ml porcine insulin), which is used to treat dogs and cats that have been diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. In healthy dogs and cats, insulin is produced by the pancreas and acts to control blood levels of glucose (sugar) by causing it to be absorbed into the cells of the body. In patients with diabetes mellitus, either insufficient insulin is produced or there is a poor response to insulin, which results in blood glucose (blood sugar) levels that are excessively high. In these dogs and cats, Caninsulin, which is given by sub-cutaneous injection, provides the insulin needed to restore normal blood glucose levels and helps control the signs of diabetes.

Carprieve

Carprieve is used to reduce pain and inflammation in dogs. Carprieve is most commonly given to improve comfort and mobility in older dogs suffering from osteoarthritis, but can also be used as pain relief and an anti-inflammatory following surgery. Carprieve contains Carprofen, which belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory class of drugs.

Cardisure

Cardisure is used in the treatment of congestive heart failure in dogs, which can be caused by the heart becoming weakened and enlarged (called dilated cardiomyopathy) or when the heart valves don’t work properly (called mitral and/or tricuspid insufficiency). Cardisure, which contains Pimobendan, stimulates the heart and strengthens its contractions. Treatment of dogs with heart failure is usually managed by giving a combination of heart medications, including Cardisure.

Cyclavance

Cyclavance is used to treat chronic atopic skin disease in dogs and cats, which is caused by hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions to allergens found in the environment. There are many different potential allergens, including pollens, house dust mites and foods. In pets with atopy, these allergens trigger a hypersensitivity reaction that causes itchy and inflamed skin. Cyclavance contains Ciclosporine A, an immunomodulator, which helps treat chronic atopic dermatitis (skin disease) by targeting the cells involved in the allergic response and reducing inflammation.

Feliway

Feliway is a pheromone product which helps to reduce stress in cats and is available in a spray or plug in diffuser format. It helps to encourage social confidence and safety in the environment and is able to help cats with all common signs of stress such as hiding, scratching, spraying and conflict. There are three types of Feliway available including: Classic (Feline Facial Pheromone) and Optimum which are good for general stress and Feliway Friends (Cat Appeasing Pheromone) which is good for stress in multi-cat households.

Incurin

Incurin is used to treat urinary incontinence (leaking urine) in spayed bitches, caused by a hormone-dependent loss of function of the urethral sphincter (sphincter mechanism incompetence). Incurin contains Estriol, which is a natural oestrogen hormone. Treatment with Incurin helps restore oestrogen levels therefore supporting the normal mechanisms that provide urethral sphincter tone and urinary control.

Meloxaid/Rheumocam

Meloxaid and Rheumocam are pain relief and anti-inflammatory drugs used in dogs and cats with musculo-skeletal problems. Musculo-skeletal disorders, such as osteoarthritis, affect the muscles, bones and joints and can cause discomfort and loss of mobility. Meloxaid and Rheumocam contain Meloxicam, which belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory class of drugs.

Optimmune

Optimmune is an eye ointment used to treat ‘dry eye’ in dogs. ‘Dry eye’ (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) occurs when the dog’s own immune system damages the gland that produces tears, which normally lubricate the eye. This results in the eye becoming dry and susceptible to secondary problems. Optimmune contains Ciclosporin, which suppresses the immune system, allowing normal tear production and restoring the protective tear film of the eye.

Onsior

Onsior is used to treat pain and inflammation in dogs and cats with chronic osteoarthritis. Most commonly used post operatively in both cats and dogs, Onsior is an NSAID (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) of the coxib class. It persists longer at the site of inflammation than in the bloodstream, providing pain relief with once daily doses. Onsior can be administered either orally or through injection, with the injectable formulation being used in practice and the tablets to be given to the pet’s owner to be administered at home.

Omega+

Omega+ is used as a dietary supplement to help condition the skin and coat in dogs and cats. Omega+ contains essential fats (Omega 3 & Omega 6 fatty acids) which are components of the skin, nails and coat. The quality of the fat in the diet influences the condition of the skin and coat. The Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, EPA and DHA, found in fish and fish oil have been shown to have an inhibitory effect on inflammation in the body and beneficial effects on the skin, coat and joints.

Propalin

Propalin, for dogs, is used to treat urinary incontinence (leaking urine) in female dogs, usually spayed, secondary to their reduced effectiveness of the urethral sphincter (urethral sphincter incompetence). Propalin contains phenylpropanola-mine, which stimulates the nerves controlling the urethral sphincter muscles, strengthening and tightening the seal of the urethral sphincter, reducing urine leakage.

Thyforon

Thyforon is used to treats dogs with hypothyroidism, which is a condition that means that the dog’s natural levels of thyroid hormone are too low. Thyforon contains a synthetic thyroid hormone, called L-Thyroxine, which supplements the dog’s natural hormone production to provide a normal overall level of T4 (thyroid hormone) and reduce the clinical signs caused by hypothyroidism.

Vetoryl

Vetoryl is effective for both adrenal-based and pituitary-based Cushing’s Disease. Vetoryl will help your dog live out his years more comfortably and with a better quality of life. Vetoryl blocks the excess cortisol from being produced. The overall result is that blood cortisol levels are reduced. Once the reduced concentrations have become stable the various systems affected by the raised cortisol levels can begin to heal. The skin becomes more elastic, the coat fills in and begins to return to its normal luster. Excessive thirst and hunger reduce and bladder control returns.

Vidalta

Vidalta is a medication used to treats cats suffering from hyperthyroidism, which is a condition that means that the cat’s natural levels of thyroid hormone are too high. Vidalta works by reducing the amount of thyroid hormone that the thyroid gland is able to produce, which lowers the overall thyroid hormone levels for the cat and reduces the clinical signs associated with hyperthyroidism. Vidalta contains Carbimazole.

Vivitonin

Vivitonin is used to improve circulation to the heart, the brain and skeletal muscles in dogs, which can improve their demeanour, energy levels, willingness to exercise and exercise tolerance. Vivitonin is particularly useful to treat older dogs where these benefits are most commonly needed. Vivitonin contains Propentofylline.
